One of the main reasons we decided to visit Denmark is because it’s the home of LEGO. My son Jacob has been a huge LEGO fan since he was quite young and was actually the one who suggested going to the “country where LEGOs were created”!
Having travelled around Europe multiple times before, I knew that I didn’t want to rent a car (public
transportation is so easy to use! And the cost of rental cars these days is off the charts anyway). A Eurail pass was the way to go. We reached out to ACP Rail and were excited to take advantage of our First Class rail passes.
Here are some pro tips for using your Eurail pass:
- Book seat reservations at the train station so you ensure to get seats. Trains can be overbooked during busy season and you want to be sure to sit with your fellow travellers!
- Make sure you reserve your trip via the Rail Planner app because an agent will check your passes.
- Check the schedules and direction you need to travel in. Sounds like a basic tip, but you don’t want to
lose precious travel time by going in the wrong direction!
The train trip from Copenhagen to Billund (or, the home of LEGO) took about 2 hours. My family and I comfortably stretched out our legs in our 4 seater located in First Class. We had everything we needed for the trip – free Wi-Fi, plugs to charge our devices, access to a clean bathroom and complimentary water and hot beverages. Plus, we were served a delicious, complimentary breakfast of cheese, breads and jam. The Danes really know how to make good bread! Once we arrived in Billund, we hopped on a bus at the train station that brought us directly to our accommodations.
Billund is a paradise for all things LEGO. We stayed in a rental home part of Lalandia, a massive complex complete with waterslides, an indoor amusement park with tennis courts, mini-golf, trampolines, restaurants and a grocery store. It’s essentially Las Vegas for families! LEGOLAND was a 5-minute walk from Lalandia, where we spent 2 days visiting the park and going on rides. The LEGO House was the highlight of this leg of the trip, as it housed many activities to use your imagination and play with LEGOs in so many shapes and forms. We also ate at Mini Chef, an on-site restaurant where you build your meal with LEGOS and feed them into a computer that takes your orders – and then get your food delivered by robots!
